Bulking Protocol – Part 1

Thanks for emailing me. I was not being sarcastic about contacting me about how to put on size and muscle and more specifically my bulking protocol. The Power Athlete Bulking Protocol is easy to follow and has always resulted in a bigger, stronger, more muscular athletes. Where we have succeeded, and others failed, is consistency...

Application

You can take the best minds in the world when it comes to program design, the best equipment and the location and the still not the see the results of a single coach in a home garage gym with a barbell. Every program whether it be BFS, CrossFit Football’s Power Athlete, Westside, Wendler’s 5-3-1 or Starting Strength is only as good as the implementation by the coach or athlete and how well as the athlete’s dedication to the program...

Blood Work

He forwarded me you email, as this is my wheelhouse. I have been involved in laboratory testing of athletes and non-athletes since 1989 and have a data base of over 30,000 subjects. I make the following suggestions and share with you that you can get these tests ordered by any physician and performed at a variety of labs. However in almost every case I have reviewed, people mess things up. Either the physician orders the wrong tests or skips tests that are important and/or the client/patient does something to mess up the results. So first let’s standardize things...

Swagger

I want to thank you for the programming. I don't play football, but I did reap the benefits of your training today. I caught a guy breaking into my truck and trying to steal my dog and guitar this afternoon. WTF! I sprinted over and leapt while kicking the door into his body and then preceded to beat him mercilessly and finally, power clean and body slam him into a wall. Without your program, I wouldn't have been able to do what had to be done; sprinting, jumping, beating down was just another DWOD. Now I am going to have some tequila...

Ski & CFFB

Hey John...Wondering if CFFB is appropriate for alpine skiing/racing? In the past I’ve used CrossFit for off/on season training and during that short duration, my strength never really progressed to a desired level; total shocker. I’m not the type to combine 20 different programs into my own secret squirrel special sauce, so I am looking for some guidance...

White Lies

Would shuttle runs be a good replacement for sprinting? The gym I belong to doesn't have a very good running area (it's a beat up alley with pot holes and gravel). I could probably make do on some work outs where I could bring the rest of the equipment outside, but that's probably a PITA most of the time. Inside, I can do 25' shuttle runs, so a 40-yard sprint would be about 5 turns. I realize I won't be able to go full speed, but it would still bust up my lungs pretty good. I ask because I want to start the CFFB program. I'm growing dissatisfied with the regular CF programming and want to get stronger. The only problem I see with doing the CFFB programming is the sprinting...

PAGAN

I attended the CrossFit Football trainer seminar couple months back in the UK and learned more from your team than any certification I have attended. So much so, we want to host one in Germany whenever you are available. I have started training a few players from a professional hockey team in Nuremberg, Germany in preparation for their upcoming season. They want a strength program in conjunction with their conditioning work. They have exposure to strength training but nothing you would call organized. I would like to start them on the amateur linear progression...

Golf, Sport & CFFB

Whether golf is a sport or match does not take away from the fact that participants can benefit from being strong, better conditioned and more explosive. A solid strength and conditioning base can pay dividends usually reserved from sports played on the field, pitch or ice. Universally, increasing an athlete’s ability to generate force will aid in driving the ball farther as it would decreasing a 40 yard sprint time. Creating a strong base and correct posture by placing a heavy barbell on your back during squatting will result in an improved ability to hit the ball as it would to hitting an opponent...

Kal-El

My question is semi complicated, and think it’s just could be from overtraining. In the past few weeks, I have been training MMA daily, while supplementing rugby into the training. This makes my days of physical activity quite taxing. I try to stick to the nutrition guidelines you have given us, and for the most part I have been able to keep up. In the past two weeks though I really started to feel drained and tired. Two days ago while at rugby practice the coaches pulled me aside and asked me if there were any issues going on...
