“As for the primitive, I hark back to it because we are still very primitive. How many thousands of years of culture, think you, have rubbed and polished at our raw edges? One probably; at the best, no more than two. And that takes us back to screaming savagery, when, gross of body and deed, we drank blood from the skulls of our enemies, and hailed as highest paradise the orgies and carnage of Valhalla.” – JACK LONDON
Invictus
Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.
In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.
Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds and shall find me unafraid.
It matters not how strait the gait,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.
William Earnest Henley
Mongol General: Hao! Dai ye! We won again! This is good, but what is best in life?
Mongol: The open steppe, fleet horse, falcons at your wrist, and the wind in your hair.
Mongol General: Wrong! Conan! What is best in life?
Conan: To crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentation of their women.
Mongol General: That is good! That is good.
Awesome quote. This made me go sign out some Jack London from the library.
Loki – As you know the quote from Conan is as close to my heart as the Talk To Me Johnnie quote in First Blood. What you might not know is the quote has some real life grounding as one of the world’s most successful warrior, conqueror, thief, murder and father goes on record as saying…
The greatest happiness is to scatter your enemy, to drive him before you, to see his cities reduced to ashes, to see those who love him shrouded in tears, and to gather into your bosom his wives and daughters – Genghis Khan.
In 2003 they did some genetic testing of men living in lands of the former Mongol empire, they found 8% carried identical Y-chromosomes. Since the Y-chromosomes are passed from father to son, 16 million eurasian men are direct descendants of Genghis Khan and his direct family. Now the “gather into your bosom his wives and daughters” takes on new meaning.
John- I didn’t know that… I also didn’t know that I could appreciate Robert Howard any more than I already did, but there it is.
It’s pronouned “VIMMEN”.
As in: “Hear zee lamentations of zer vimmen!”
[…] One poem that stuck with me is this one by Jack London. […]
